Monday Musings: Knee Bummer and NaNoWriMo Progress

I have been having a bit of trouble with my knee lately. It started a few weeks ago, but we were having a full week of rain at the time, so I wrote it off to arthritis acheys. Then, the weather turned cold and I thought: Yeah, well that’s what happens when the joints get old. But this past week has me thinking it’s not just arthritis. I have been getting pain- not just the arthritis aches, but pain- when I walk the dog. The last couple days of the week, I cut our walks short because it hurt. Saturday, we spent a good portion of the day out shopping and running errands, as usual. I started ibuprofen in the morning and figured I’d just power through. Not so much. By the end of the day, I was limping and really hurting. Sigh. So I guess I will have to call my doctor and see what he says. Which will likely be a referral to the orthopedic. We do have a very good orthopedic surgeon, so if that’s what needs to be done, at least I know the knee will be in good hands.

I did spend Sunday basically resting the knee, continuing the ibuprofen and using my TENS thingie. Seems to be helping. It’s not as ouchy as it was. Of course, I am also not walking around on it all day, either. Makes it tough on Lambeau, since walking is hard for me. But he does love to play fetch, so I can take him out and sit in the lawn chair, tossing his toys for him. He gets his exercise in and I don’t have to annoy my knee.

In other news, I am making a bit of progress with NaNoWriMo. As mentioned before, I am not going for the full 50K novel this time. I’m working on fleshing out and doing some writing on a YA fantasy idea. I am going to work for about 25K of actual writing, along with working on outlining and other planning details. I’ve written about 8 or 9 thousand words on it, most of it pretty scattered. A bit of a beginning, and some that will occur later in the story. I’m a little concerned that the voice I am using is a bit too young sounding for YA. I am thinking I may ask some more YA-focused folk I know to take a look at some of the pieces and see what they think. This is new territory for me. I’m probably overthinking, as usual, but if there is a problem, I’d rather catch it now and not have to essentially rewrite the whole thing later. At least I am getting some progress made. I was afraid I was going to spend all my time staring at a blank screen, trying to figure out where to start with it.

To everyone doing NaNoWriMo this month, I hope the writing is going well and you are right on track with your word count. If not, well, don’t give up! We all fall behind at some point. Just keep on writing!

  1. Hey, sorry your joints are hurting you as well, I am having more pain than usual as my arthritis is acting up. I also went off my Celebrex and Gabapentin, this may account for the pain. I need to get back to using my essential oils and go get myself some good CBD cream and see if that helps. I really don’t want to go back on the medication.
Congrats on your Nano progress, I think I am on schedule with a total word count of 17,280 at this point. I am writing a memoir, right now it is all over the place, I can always edit later. Good luck to you as well and I hope you get feeling better.
