Friday Review: Gather Her Round (Tufa #5) by Alex Bledsoe

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kera Rogers is hiking in the woods near Needsville when she is attacked and killed by a giant feral hog. Bliss Overbay joins Tufa hunters along with game warden Jack Cates in trying to track down and kill the hog which seems to have almost supernatural powers. But they are not the only ones looking to kill the giant pig. Kera has been dating Duncan, who intends to kill the hog himself. And then he finds out that Kera has also been seeing his best friend, Adam, behind his back. Duncan persuades Adam to join him in the hunt, and Adam’s is the next body found, presumably also killed by the wild animal and its herd. But there are questions around Adam’s death, and the Tufa have their own ways of solving the mysteries that surround them and their hidden heritage in the hills of Tennessee.

This is the fifth in the Tufa series by Alex Bledsoe, and like all of the others, it does not disappoint. It’s probably the most gruesome of the books so far, with its main plot element of wild hogs killing and devouring humans, although the killing is not limited to what the pigs have done. There are many familiar characters in the story, and many favorites from previous books make an appearance here. The setting is familiar by now after five books, but there is always some part of Cloud County to explore anew. The Tufa fae heritage is explored more with each installment, and the intimate part that music plays in their daily lives and in their supernatural abilities is still a strong element in the story. The plot has its twists and turns, and there is an element of romance as well.

I have really enjoyed reading this series, and look forward to reading the last installment, even though it will be disappointing to see it end. Anyone who likes a good story, with elements of Celtic fairytale and Appalachian folklore will likely find the Tufa novels a good choice.
