If you have been following this blog for a while, you know that I set a reading goal every year, and every year, I do a post on how I did. This year? Yeah, failed again. Didn’t meet my goal in 2023, and didn’t in 2024, either. My goal was 30 books. I read 22. Goodreads says 23, but that does include one DNF. Not very good. But I did figure out one thing that holds me back. I am one of those people who feels that if I start a book, I MUST finish it. Even if it’s terrible. Even if I don’t like it and am not enjoying reading it. What that does, however, is give me long periods where I just don’t read because “Oh, yeah. THAT book. Ugh.” I have decided that going forward, I will just DNF those books that stop my reading progress. Heck, if I am not enjoying a book to the point that I am avoiding reading it, why am I bothering?
Anyway, on to some metrics, which you may or may not find interesting:
Total Books Read: 22 Finished, 1 DNF
Genres (And Books Read in Each):
Sci-fi- 7
Fantasy- 5
Historical Fiction- 3
Non-fiction- 3
Memoir- 1
Horror- 2
Thriller- 1
General Fiction- 1
Total Pages Read: 7,957
Shortest Book: 81 pages
Longest Book: 816 pages
Average Length: 345 pages
So, there it is. Sci-fi and fantasy remain my most read genres, and I don’t expect that to change. But I think I do okay in adding other things to my reading list over the year. For 2025, I am backing off on my challenge and going for 25 books read. Let’s hope I do better!
My latest book is a collection of very short stories, half science fiction and half fantasy, called “Crossed Wires and Other Very Short Stories”. I have also written a few other short pieces, another collection, two novels, and an urban fantasy series. You can find most of them at Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and wherever e-books are sold. A few are also available from Amazon in paperback. My novel, “Circle Unbroken” is also on Kindle Unlimited, if that’s your reading preference. You can find out about all of them here.
There are also some stories you can read here on my site, mostly the yearly Halloween short I write, but there are a few others. You can read them from here

I did not meet my goal and I also have a DNF. I have to look at Goodreads to see how to label that. I also have 2 or 3 books that I haven’t put there yet!

Goodreads doesn’t have a way to DNF a book. I just made a tag “Gave Up” so I would know. I’ve also started using the Storygraph app which does allow you to directly DNF a book.
