It was another rather poor year in reading, I am sorry to say. I read a whole eleven books in 2025 (twelve if you count the one DNF). There were many reasons for the slow year, but I think one of them was a bit of burnout. As I said in this post from last year, I was feeling some pressure about doing reviews of all the books I read and seeing the backlog of reviews was getting a bit daunting. I made some changes to help reduce that stress, and it did help some. But I still found that I was in a reading slump at the end of the year. So, I took another good, hard look at my reading habits to see if there was more I could do.
As it turns out, there is. I have a lot of books. Oh, not as many as some people, for sure. But there are a good number, including a number of books, both print and ebooks, that are unread. Some of those I have had for years, and just never got around to reading. Some are more recent acquisitions that are waiting their turn. And in doing that, I realized a few things. One, I have a lot of older books. Not that they are bad books or unreadable or anything like that, but they were published years ago. Two, my taste in stories has changed. Stories I would have devoured a few years ago have much less appeal to me now. And seeing those titles on my shelves, real or virtual, left me feeling– torn. One one hand, I feel that I should read them. I mean, I bought them, right? There must have been a reason for that. On the other hand, I would look at some of them and think meh. So, another decision. I am going through all my books and weeding out the ones I will likely never read. I’ve culled a few already, and it feels good in a way. That pressure of seeing those books sitting unread is less, and it makes room for books that I am more excited about reading. It’s helped already. I’ve finished one book this month and have made good progress on a second. I hope it keeps up. I have missed reading, even while it was not as much fun at times.
All that said, here’s some breakdown on what I did read in 2025:
Total Books Read: Eleven plus one DNF
Pages Read: 3,598
(Stats are pulled from Goodreads, so that page total likely includes the DNF book, so a bit less)
Shortest Book: 109 pages
Longest Book: 484 pages
Genres:
Fantasy: 7
Sci-Fi: 3
Mystery: 2
Memoir: 1
Non-Fiction: 1
(Yes, more than twelve, I know. But some books fit into more than one category, like Memoir and Non-Fiction)
So, there it is, sad as my reading year was. I really hope to do better this year. I am off to a pretty good start, I have to say. Happy 2026 Reading!
