Say Hello to Tucker

We added a second dog to the household a week ago Friday. We thought it would be good for Lambeau to have a doggy friend to play with since, even at nine, Lambeau still has a lot of energy and is an active, playful dog. We also thought it would probably be best to look at an older dog, thinking a young’un might be too much even for Lambeau’s energy. Well, that didn’t go so well. Most of the older (and I am talking 4-6 years old) dogs wanted absolutely nothing to do with Lambeau’s energy and active play style. One of them even went straight to a muzzle grab without a growl or other warning. So, we changed tactics and looked at the younger ones.

We went to the local Humane Society to look. As I said above, we tried a few older dogs but they would not have worked well. We decided to try out a one year, four month old mixed breed guy. He and Lambeau got on great at their doggy meet. Next up was cat testing him, since we do have Guinness at home. They said at the shelter that they took him into the cat area. He was interested but not overly so. Took a cat (dog familiar) out of a cage. Still no evidence of prey drive. Put the cat down. Cat hissed at dog. Dog ran away. Well, I guess that answers that! He came home with us on Friday, 6/9.

They called him Berlin at the shelter, but we decided he was more of a Tucker. As I said above, all the shelter knew is that he was a mixed breed. I do have a DNA test out on him, so in a few weeks we should know more. We suspect perhaps some Weimaraner because of the coat and eye color, but we’ll see. He’s a sweet dog, not too overly bouncy in the house, and he and Lambeau get on great. They exhaust each other playing in the yard. See?

Of course, there are puppy things. Yes, at a year old, he’s technically not a puppy, but still has some puppy attitude. He gets into things, he is curious, he loves to chew- and he is way more of a power chewer than Lambeau, and I thought Lambeau was tough on toys! But he is starting to figure things out. He listens pretty well for a dog his age. His leash manners aren’t perfect but not terrible. I am starting on some training with him now, and he is learning from Lambeau, as well. He chases squirrels, chipmunks, and birds in the yard, but he leaves Guinness alone in the house. I think we picked a good one. We are still in the three week adjustment period, but so far, he’s doing pretty darn good.

Okay, I will stop yakking now and give you a few more pictures:

I think they all are going to be fine!
