Friday Review: Jesus Christ in the Underworld by Simon Christopher

Jesus Christ in the UnderworldJesus Christ in the Underworld by Simon Christopher

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is hard to describe, and certainly hard to pigeonhole. As it starts, we meet Jesus, newly dead and arriving in Sheol, where he fully expects to be greeted by God. Instead, he’s treated like any other dead soul, which leaves him angry, confused, and looking for answers. Along the way, he meets angels and archangels, other prophets with varying degrees of sanity, mysterious shadows, and others of the dead who have embraced their afterlives.

The book is well-written, with an engaging plot, an intriguing take on the afterlife and its inhabitants, and touches of humor. It is part political thriller, with angelic factions set against each other, part theological investigation that deals with the question of a man’s purpose, and part character study in Jesus, who is sure that his answers must be found.

It is a fresh take on the (after)life of Christ, and poses as many questions as it answers. I found it a fascinating read.
