As I have every year for the past few, I am choosing a word for my new year. It’s not a resolution, as such, but more of a direction or reminder of how I would like this year to proceed. I had a list, but in the end, it was a word that I saw very close to New Year’s that I ultimately chose.
The Word of the Year 2026 is
d
Movement
With this one, I don’t just mean physical movement, although that is part of it. I want to focus on non-physical movement, as well. While thinking about this choice, and knowing that the word I choose is meant to help me make the year ahead a productive one in every aspect of life. And I realized that, for a while now, I have felt stuck. Stagnant. Like I am just treading water instead of moving forward. Or even backward. Just stuck. I hardly wrote anything in 2025. Reading was far down from what it usually is. I did and accomplished very little. I was stuck, spinning my wheels and getting nowhere. I’m not sure why the year went like that, but I do know it’s got to change.
I also know it’s not going to change unless I change it. So, the choice of Movement. To remind me that if I don’t move, if I don’t take those first steps in whatever I am doing. Get out there and just do it, as the familiar slogan says. Move the words on the paper (or screen). Move those muscles with exercise and walking. Move the brain with reading and learning. Pull out of the rut and get back on the road, any road. The important thing is to move, not to arrive. If I’m moving, I will arrive. Let’s go. Let’s move right on into 2026.
As always, drink your water. Eat a vegetable. Get out in the fresh air and lose the stale. Be nice. Or better, be nicer.
