I saw something the other day where a person was, well, not really complaining, but I guess questioning why someone would call a day outstanding when it was full of simple, everyday things with nothing huge or important. And, while I think I understand that attitude, I wonder why we can’t consider those little victories “outstanding”.
It’s great to have big goals and expectations, and to rejoice and celebrate when those happen. It’s also wonderful to experience the unexpected things that happen extraordinarily. But for most of us, those are things that happen once in a while. Nothing should take away our joy in those big things, but why do so many not notice and find joy in the little, everyday things, as well? If we wait for those big moments to fill our lives with joy, then it seems to me we end up spending most of our lives, if not joyless, at least not as happy as we could be. Looking at things like a good cup of coffee, the rose bush in our garden blooming, or a cool morning rainstorm, shrugging, and saying “eh, that happens all the time,” leaves a sort of void in life.
Looking at those little things with joy and letting them make our day outstanding means we are simply going to be happy and full of joy most of the time. It lifts us up mentally and emotionally, and really who couldn’t use more of that these days?
So, go ahead. Have an outstanding day. Even if the things that are standing out are small, everyday joys, because those are the things that will lift you up every day.
