Monday Musings: Clarifying Ebook Formats, and the Links, Once Again

It seems there has been a small amount of confusion on the ebook formats that are available for Six of One. And I understand it. In particular one site is a bit confusing, since if you click the link that says “Available for these Devices” (or similar wording), it sends you to a graphic that shows a computer, an ereader, a tablet, and a phone. Now, that easily could cause someone to think it is any brand or type of those devices, when, in truth, there is only one ebook format available from that retailer. So, to clarify things, here is a list of formats, what devices they are supported on, and a list of who sells what. I hope this helps. Trust me, it was confusing to me when I dived into all this! I had to learn a lot.

.html (good for sampling in web browser)
.epub (Apple iPad/iBooks, Nook, Sony Reader, and Kobo ereaders/tablets, and most e-reading apps including Stanza, Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions, calibre, others)
.mobi (Kindle devices and Kindle apps, as well as e-reading apps like calibre)
.pdf (good for reading on PC, or for home printing, and some e-reading apps)
.rtf (Rich Text, readable on most word processors, preserves most formatting)
.lrf (Use only for older model Sony Readers that don’t support .epub)
.pdb (Palm Doc for Palm reading devices)
.txt ( Plain text, flexible, but lacks much formatting)

For the main retailers:
Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Apple all use .epub
Amazon uses .mobi
Smashwords has all of the above formats available.

Now, as for availability:

As of today, Six of One is on pre-order from Barnes and Noble, and Kobo. I hope the Apple iBookstore will have it soon. All are .epub format only. It will be on pre-sale until October 8th, when it will be available from Amazon (.mobi for Kindle users) and Smashwords (all formats). I am really sorry for any confusion. It is bewildering, what with all the different formats, and places to buy. Bottom line? Check your favorite place to buy ebooks. If it isn’t there for pre-order now, check again on or after October 8th. If it isn’t there at that point, let me know. And I thank you for following all of this!

Now for the good stuff! You can download a sample of Six of One, at no charge, and in any format, from:

And you can pre-order it for delivery on October 8th from:

Barnes and Noble (.epub):
Kobo (.epub):
