It seems odd to think that with this New Year, we are moving into a new decade. Not that this is the first time that has happened to me, of course. I am have seen a few decades come and go along the way to 2020. It feels different this time, somehow. Maybe it’s partly because I know I have fewer decades in front of me than behind. Which is not to say I am falling into some gloom-and-doom mentality. Far from it. I am pretty happy with who and where I am, and am not about to give up just yet. Oh, there are things that could improve, as always and with everyone, but essentially, I am good with where I am.
A lot happened in those past ten years. Some less than ideal, but most pretty good. We moved to the place we live in now, which we are quite happy with. We bought our first new new car in many years. I published not only my first book but a number of others, as well. We were blessed with more grandchildren. I am basically healthy and plan to try to make sure that only gets better as we move into the new decade. There were bumps and bruises here and there, but that, as they say, is life. We survived, and moved on where necessary.
I think it would be easy to look around and say the world is crumbling around our ears. Climate change, political extremism, dividing lines that seem impossible to bridge- so many things to cause worry. There is a strong pull, I think, for people to feel either optimistic that things must get better, or pessimistic that we are doomed. I was reading someone else’s thoughts on this year’s ending and it was pointed out that in many ways, those two points of view are endpoints and in many ways, limiting. What we need more is hope. Hope is fluid. It invites the possibility of change and perhaps, encourages the hopeful to start moving in the direction of change instead of standing still in the conviction that they will or won’t. Let’s make these new 20s roar as loudly as the past ones did. But let’s make these roar with hope, and let that hope lead us to the changes that will make our lives and the world in general, a better place.
Happy New Year!
