And So It Begins

For those of us in the US, this past Thursday was Thanksgiving which, for many, marks the beginning of the winter holiday season. It’s also been a bit of a controversial holiday lately for some, but I choose to think of it more as a day for family and gratitude. The actual history of the day may be in question, but there is no reason we can’t change the attitude around it and make this holiday truly about giving thanks for what we, here and now, have.

We had a smaller group than usual this year. Just five of us- myself, the BaldMan, Middle Daughter, and the BaldMan’s parents. It was still a good day. We had the usual meal- turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cornbread dressing, two types of cranberries, green beans, and pumpkin pie. Everything was delicious!

Of course, that also means that Friday was the infamous Black Friday. That day when you (supposedly) get the best deals on all the hot holiday items. No, thanks. I worked retail for too many years to get suckered into that nonsense. First, for the majority of the items being hyped for Black Friday, yeah, you will get a good deal, but it won’t be the last time you will get as good a deal before Christmas. A few things maybe, but not most. It’s not worth the craziness that possesses people who are out that day. I stay home.

Which is not to say I didn’t buy anything. I did order some really nice special edition books from Grim Oak Press. But I managed that right from my desk here.

Speaking of shopping, we did our usual grocery run on Saturday, and then stopped in to the Crystal City Olive Oil store and picked up some nice olive oils. There is a Plato’s Closet in the same plaza, and we went in to look around there, as well. I was looking for a short winter jacket. I have a long down coat but I wanted something shorter for dog walking and such. Didn’t find anything there, but I did score a long-sleeved Green Bay logo shirt and an Oakland Raiders quilted lining jacket for the grand total of $17. If you have ever looked at officially authorized team merch, you know what a deal that was! I saw other nice looking things, but wasn’t really clothes shopping right then. I will go back.

Sunday, I pulled the Christmas decoration boxes out of the cubby in the BaldMan’s office and moved them to the spare bedroom. That way, I don’t have to disturb him while he’s working to start figuring out where I am going to put everything here in the new house. All my pictures of what goes where are now out the window! It will be interesting to see how it goes.

We also got a light dusting of snow overnight on Saturday. So the winter season begins, also.

Make this week a good one, ok?
